Gift of Life and BBVA Compass: Saving Lives in Southeast Texas

BBVA Compass

Thanks to the extraordinary support of BBVA Compass, 40 medically underserved Southeast Texas women received free clinical breast exams and mammograms from the Gift of Life.

“BBVA took a real active involvement in this several years ago when we recognized how important it is to assist those who can’t afford healthcare on their own,” said Will Leonard, BBVA Compass Area President of Commercial Lending. “We’re very active in volunteering and the Gift of Life fundraisers. We are proud to support generous underwriting through our foundation, because we do recognize, having employees that live and work in this area, how important this cause is and how needed it is by the people it serves.”

BBVA Compass is a flourishing financial institution ranked as the fourth largest bank in Texas. For the past 15 years, BBVA Compass has annually supported the Gift of Life Women’s Health Program, which provides uncompensated healthcare services throughout seven Southeast Texas counties, including the provision of free clinical breast exams, mammograms and diagnostic testing, when needed. Through the support of BBVA Compass, the Gift of Life has been able to provide nearly 600 free clinical breast exams and mammograms at BBVA-sponsored sites and help extend the lives of numerous women who were diagnosed with breast cancer through these efforts.

“Anything like this has to have the financial support as well as the ability to reach out, touch people and make them aware of what is available,” commented Orange County Commissioner Barry Burton. “That is probably what is the biggest and most important things that the business community and government can do for the public. BBVA Compass’s involvement, not only financially, but to get the word out is critical to the success of the Gift of Life and to treating people.”

Gift of Life clients benefit from support services that bridge disparities limiting the deliverance of lifesaving care. From childcare, transportation and translation assistance, each client is individually navigated through the organization’s corridor of compassionate care. Upon the diagnosis of breast cancer, Gift of Life clients are provided a case manager who will accompany them throughout their healing journey and facilitate services to alleviate the emotional, financial and medical pressures accompanying every cancer diagnosis. Since its inception, the Gift of Life has diagnosed nearly 200 medically underserved Southeast Texas women with breast cancer and navigated them into treatment.

The altruistic support of BBVA Compass illuminates the company’s commitment to helping enhance healthcare services for individuals who cannot afford medical care or insurance.

Make Your Blessings Count This Holiday Season

Our father, Samir, survived his battle against cancer for two years. However, his battle came to an end last December. He was a wise and compassionate entrepreneur who instilled the belief that investing in great people and quality causes gives the greatest returns. Our father’s business philosophy remains at the heart of all that we do at Tri-Con, Inc. and Exxpress Mart.

During his battle with cancer, we recognized how fortunate we were to have health insurance while many in our community struggle to receive basic medical care. In times like these, you recognize how important health insurance really is and how beneficial it is to recovery. If you don’t have health insurance, it’s so important to learn more with quotes to ensure you are covered if emergency healthcare is needed. After this experience, we sought a way to make a difference and became committed to the mission of the Gift of Life.

Our support of the Gift of Life inspired a seasonal giving initiative we call the Holiday Reindeer Campaign. This unique partnership between the Gift of Life and Exxpress Mart employees encourages customers to support this worthy cause by purchasing festive paper reindeer. All proceeds go directly to the Gift of Life, offering support to those who need it most.

Since the project began three years ago, our customers’ generosity has helped further the Gift of Life’s free medical and educational services. As a result of these efforts, Southeast Texans have identified Exxpress Mart as a family business that cares about the community. Putting our community first is more than a philosophy, it is a call to action – paying it forward.

This year, Exxpress Mart and the Gift of Life invite businesses and other individuals to participate in our Holiday Reindeer Campaign. Embrace the spirit of the season and contact the Gift of Life at 409.833.3663 to become involved in this worthwhile endeavor.

May we all count our blessings and make those blessings count,

Elias Sarkis

Gift of Life Is Providing Additional FREE Breast Cancer Screenings for Financially Eligible Women in Southeast Texas

Gift of Life Is Providing Additional FREE Breast Cancer Screenings for Financially Eligible Women in Southeast Texas

In celebration of the Gift of Life Program’s 20th Anniversary, the organization is making available hundreds of additional free clinical breast exams and mammograms for financially eligible women throughout Southeast Texas. The program’s compassionate staff creates a warm and welcoming experience by providing childcare, refreshments and transportation to Baptist Hospitals Beaumont and Orange, as well as to numerous mobile van sites. Immediate openings are currently available for women who cannot afford medical care and either have no insurance or a high deductible.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. Approximately 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. This year, it is estimated that 231,840 women will be diagnosed with the disease. Decreases in breast cancer morbidity rates are directly attributable to earlier detection through screening and enhanced awareness, as well as progressive treatment options. Early detection truly is the best detection.

In response to the medical needs of underserved women, the Gift of Life has created a regional full spectrum of care to reduce healthcare disparities through the provision of free breast cancer screenings, critical cancer education and extensive case management for women who require diagnostic evaluations and cancer treatment.

The Gift of Life has provided thousands of women with breast cancer screenings and additional diagnostic tests, including ultrasounds and biopsies, when necessary. Since its inception, more than 175 Southeast Texas women have been diagnosed with breast cancer and navigated into treatment.

Eligible women are encouraged to contact the Gift of Life TODAY to find out if they qualify for a free mammogram.

Men Against Cancer

Gateway to Good Health

James Fowler, MD

James Fowler, MD

June is National Men’s Health Month, and the Gift of Life along with other organizations throughout the country are joining together to heighten awareness of preventable health disparities that commonly affect men. Along with hundreds of physicians, I strongly lend my voice to this critical initiative and urge all men to seek regular medical advice and preventive treatment for disease.

Despite advances in medical technology, American men live sicker and die younger than American women. A higher percentage of men have no healthcare coverage and make half as many preventive physician visits as women. Men also have a higher death rate for most of the leading causes of death.

As an internist, I can attest that prevention and awareness are the best weapons in our arsenal to battle this alarming trend. Just as men notice when our vehicles are not functioning properly, we must pay attention to our bodies’ signals and adopt healthy lifestyle habits that will keep our bodies tuned up.

All too often, I’ve treated men in my practice only when they are in incredible pain or face life-threatening complications. This scenario presents the physician with limited avenues of care and often results in a poor prognosis. We can do much more to proactively improve men’s health outcomes!

I encourage you to support the Gift of Life’s mission that addresses healthcare disparities among men and provides comprehensive health screenings for medically underserved men in Southeast Texas.

With a philanthropic network of medical professionals, the organization is hosting screening sites offering a full battery of primary care tests during the month of June. Eligible participants can receive PSA blood tests (prostate-specific antigen) and screenings for cholesterol, HIV, Hepatitis C, blood sugar and blood pressure. On-site physicians will also provide consultations to discuss the screenings and significance of test results and healthy lifestyle practices.

This is an excellent opportunity for men to access preventive healthcare and receive medical support and educational information. Screenings like these can – and will – save lives!

Health and wellness is a gift we give to ourselves and those that love us. This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate this month by making a commitment to a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Every year more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection is key to fighting breast cancer and saving lives. The Gift of Life, with funding from Chevron Phillips, provided free mammograms for 34 medically underserved Southeast Texas women April 29, 2015 in Port Arthur.

The Gift of Life is a proud recipient of generous funding from Chevron Phillips, a worldwide chemical corporation that believes real benefits can be gained by establishing effective relationships within the community.

Encouraging organizations that promote private enterprise, health services, education and civic progression has been an investment that has paid great dividends, engendering an internationally-respected reputation founded upon the company’s loyalty and goodwill.

Chevron has built an enduring legacy of compassion, donating funds to worthy causes and encouraging employees to similarly make a positive impact. Since the company’s inception, the corporation has invested more than $15 million (and countless volunteer hours) in communities where its employees live and work.

Chevron Phillips has demonstrated a sincere commitment to the Gift of Life through its consistent support of the program’s breast and prostate cancer initiatives. Company sponsorships, including employee donation-matching incentives, have furthered the program’s ability to reach individuals throughout seven Southeast Texas counties. Each year, Chevron Phillips sponsors a UTMB mobile mammography van site, which has provided nearly 150 free clinical breast exams and mammograms for medically underserved women. The company’s commitment to the Gift of Life’s prostate cancer programs has helped the organization provide primary care tests and prostate cancer treatment for medically underserved Southeast Texas men. Through this initiative, the Gift of Life has provided full treatment and support for 67 men diagnosed with prostate cancer at its screenings.
